A news from the CAN reports that a 2,000 kilograms pregnant female great white shark was captured and killed yesterday in the South Ou Fishing Port, Yi-lan.(the North-East offshore of Taiwan)
What a pathetic news. To make things more heart-broken, she was captured by the Dead wall – Drift netting, which is banned in the whole world, but not here in my country.
The local fishermen said they had never seen such big shark at the port for almost 20 years. I have heard from a researcher that in the latest years fishermen in Taiwan can no longer catch those missing large-size shark, so they catch many younger and smaller ones instead. Since the big ones were missing, (either by over fishing or other factors) fishermen catch more young fish before those are able to breeding, so the amount of adult fish are even fewer and cause a terrible vicious circle. The average price for those shark meal is about 1 US dollar per kilogram, but this large shark’s meal price was about 4 dollars per kilo, almost 4 times higher. The whole shark body was sold for about 7,200 US dollars. The buyer of this fish said simply the 50 kilograms shark’s fin can earn some money back. The shark’s fin market price was 95 US dollars per kilogram. Even the teeth can sell for a good price as adornments.
The shark is about 5 meters long and 1,930 kilograms, some eggs and young fishes was taken out. The fishing boat that captured the fish is a drift netting one which technically captured the large-size fish such as shark and spearfish.
Drift netting -- this is the point, Taiwan still allow this kind of all-killing havoc netting gear in our economic seashore and is indifferent towards the catastrophe making by these Dead Wall— a nick name of the drift nets.
The Yi-lan county government agriculture agency said the capture of white sharks are not banned in Taiwan at present, so the doing is legal. 20081107
